Backwaters - Canoe and Kayak Hire

Types of Craft Available for Hire:

Actual models available may vary.

'Family' canoe.

3 seats. Extremely stable and user-friendly. Also popular with groups.

Open Canoes.

With its large carrying capacity, the open canoe is the craft for exploring well off the beaten track, or for family picnics.

'Camping' canoe.

2 seats with large capacity for luggage.

Day Kayak.

Basic and user-friendly, take your packed lunch and spare pullover in a waterproof bag (supplied) and off you go!

Open Cockpit Kayaks.

This type of kayak is suitable for those who want to cover distances without going onto rough water. No capsize drill is required, as in the event of a capsize you will fall safely out of the kayak. These are ideal for those who want to be ON the water, not in it.

Touring kayak

For extended tours, these have a compartment for equipment, accessed by a hatch.

Whitewater-type kayak

Manouverable, but less straight-running. Limited capacity for carrying kit.
Closed-Cockpit Kayaks.

These kayaks have relatively tight-fitting cockpits sealed with spraydecks to keep out the water, and are ideal for white-water or sea touring.

To use one of these it is necessary to have practised the capsize drill, to exit the kayak safely underwater.

Touring kayak

Very straight-running, but less easy to manouvre. Large carrying capacity for kit, in two compartments. Suitable for experienced kayakers only.

From a peaceful day on the river with a waterside picnic, to a weekend or holiday exploring an area 'off the beaten track' moving between campsites or B&B's; canoe or kayak touring offers a peaceful and environmentally-friendly way to travel.

We welcome responsible canoeists will enjoy the waterways and countryside, leaving it as they found it; treating wildlife and other river users with respect.

If you are not sure about your ability for unaccompanied canoe hire see our Guidance for Canoe Hire page. We offer Guided Tours and a 'River Awareness' Day. We can also arrange skills training courses at various levels from beginner to open and white-water.
