Water Awareness Day
"We had a great time, it's really rare when you're learning and having fun at the same time!!! We went away feeling more confident and can't wait for our trip now..."
Anyone can enjoy one of our water awareness days, but they are designed to be particularly useful for anyone who:
  • is interested in canoe or kayak hire and would like some basic tuition first;
  • has recently bought, or is thinking of buying, their first canoe or touring kayak;
  • has done some canoeing or kayaking on placid sheltered water, and is thinking of moving onto more challenging conditions...

Water Awareness Days are available for river or open water environments (including coastal and estuaries). Run by instructors with decades of canoeing and kayaking experience, the aim of the day is to equip you with the knowledge to carry out a continuous, dynamic risk assessment of your journey, and take informed decisions.

After a short session making sure you can move your Open Canoe or Touring Kayak forwards, backwards, sideways and stop; we spend the rest of the day travelling a short section of the river, looking at typical water features and strategies for safe paddling.

Water Awareness days do NOT cover white-water, weirs, or additional skills needed for paddling closed-cockpit kayaks. If you would like a course covering any of these aspects, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

All year by arrangement. Check our Availability page for opportunities to join an existing day.

  From a peaceful day on the river with a waterside picnic, to a weekend or holiday exploring an area 'off the beaten track' moving between campsites or B&B's; canoe or kayak touring offers a peaceful and environmentally-friendly way to travel.

We welcome responsible canoeists will enjoy the waterways and countryside, leaving it as they found it; treating wildlife and other river users with respect.

If you are not sure about your ability for unaccompanied canoe hire see our Guidance for Canoe Hire page. We offer Guided Tours and a 'River Awareness' Day. We can also arrange skills training courses at various levels from beginner to open and white-water.
